About PowerConvert
Electrical Power Conversions for UAE Projects
PowerConvert is a set of free electrical calculators from Glow Power. Each one handles a conversion that comes up when you plan or commission temporary power: the current a load draws, the real power behind a measured current, the link between kW and kVA, and horsepower to kilowatts.
Every result updates as you type and defaults to the standard UAE system voltages (400 V three phase, 230 V single phase), with other IEC and North American voltages one tap away. These are the same conversions our power desk runs when matching generators, distribution, and cabling to a site, so you can use them to check a nameplate, confirm a feeder size, or sanity check a supplier quote.
kW to amps: current from a load
Enter a load in kW or kVA with its voltage, phase, and power factor to get the current it draws in amps. For three phase, amps = (kVA × 1000) / (1.732 × volts). The current tells you the cable size, breaker rating, and connector you need. Open the kW to amps calculator.
Amps to kW: real power from a current
Enter a measured current with the voltage, phase, and power factor to get real power in kilowatts: for three phase, kW = (1.732 × volts × amps × power factor) / 1000. Use it to turn a clamp meter reading into a kW load. Open the amps to kW calculator.
kVA to kW and kW to kVA
Convert between apparent power (kVA) and real power (kW) using the power factor: kW = kVA × power factor, and kVA = kW / power factor. Generators and transformers are rated in kVA, so this turns an equipment kW figure into the kVA a supply must provide. Open the kVA to kW calculator.
HP to kW and kW to HP: motor power
Convert mechanical horsepower to kilowatts and back: 1 HP = 0.745712 kW, and 1 kW = 1.341 HP. Motor and pump nameplates are often rated in horsepower, so this gives you the kilowatt figure for sizing. Open the HP to kW calculator.
Formula reference
| Conversion | Single phase | Three phase |
|---|---|---|
| Amps from kW | I = kW×1000 / (V × PF) | I = kW×1000 / (1.732 × V × PF) |
| Amps from kVA | I = kVA×1000 / V | I = kVA×1000 / (1.732 × V) |
| kW from amps | kW = V × I × PF / 1000 | kW = 1.732 × V × I × PF / 1000 |
| kW and kVA | kVA = kW / PF · kW = kVA × PF | |
| HP and kW | 1 HP = 0.745712 kW · 1 kW = 1.341 HP | |
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert kW to amps?
Convert kW to kVA by dividing by the power factor, then divide by the voltage, and by 1.732 as well for three phase. So amps = (kW x 1000) / (1.732 x volts x power factor) on a three phase supply, or drop the 1.732 for single phase.
How do you convert amps to kW?
Multiply the voltage, current, and power factor, then divide by 1000. For three phase also multiply by 1.732: kW = (1.732 x volts x amps x power factor) / 1000.
How do you convert kVA to kW (and kW to kVA)?
kW = kVA x power factor, and kVA = kW / power factor. For example, 1.25 kVA at power factor 0.8 is 1 kW, and 1 kW at 0.8 is 1.25 kVA.
How many kW is 1 HP, and how do you convert kW to HP?
One mechanical horsepower equals 0.745712 kW. To go from kilowatts to horsepower, divide by 0.745712, so 1 kW is about 1.341 HP.
What is the difference between kW and kVA?
kW is real (working) power; kVA is apparent power, the total the supply has to deliver. They are linked by the power factor: kW = kVA x power factor. Generators are rated in kVA, equipment is often rated in kW.
What voltage should I use in the UAE?
The UAE follows the IEC standard: 400 V line to line for three phase and 230 V line to neutral for single phase. PowerConvert uses these by default, with 415 V, 380 V, 480 V, and a custom option available.
Results are based on standard electrical formulas and are intended for planning. Confirm the final selection against equipment nameplates and your supply before installation. Need a generator sized for your full load? Try PowerMatch, our generator sizing calculator.
